Newtonbreda Primary School – Fire damages community resource

I wish to condemn the apparent overnight arson attack on a former South Belfast primary school.
If reports of arsonists being responsible for the fire at the old Newtonbreda school are correct, it’s a sad example of the lengths some people will go to inflict damage on community infrastructure.

The school has been closed for a few years now, and was only recently bought by learning disability charity Mencap who have lodged plans to redevelop it. I hope last nights fire won’t affect those plans, or cause any difficulties for Mencap.

I wish to acknowledge the work of the Fire Service in tackling the blaze, and call on anyone with information on the cause to contact the police.
