I want to congratulate Archbishop Eamon Martin on his elevation to the role of Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland following Pope Francis’ acceptance of Cardinal Brady’s resignation.
Archbishop Martin has done fantastic work in Derry and as coadjutor Archbishop of Armagh since his appointment last year.
The Church faces huge challenges in the time ahead but I have been very glad to hear the Archbishop’s thoughtful and sensitive remarks on the lessons that must be learned following cases of institutional child sex abuse. There is much work to be done to demonstrate to parishioners, and indeed the Irish people more widely, that the church is capable of change. I have every confidence that Archbishop Martin is the man for the job.
Again, I want to offer my sincere congratulations and look forward to meeting with the new Primate of All Ireland in the coming weeks.
