This mornings announcements by Health Minister Jim Wells regarding childrens heart surgery and radiotherapy services underpin the potential to improve health services on a cross border basis.
Cross border co-operation on health care is an area that I believe there should be greater emphasis on. Whilst the priority must remain the needs of patients and service users, the concept that Island wide shared services can benefit everyone is a sound one.
Such co-operation is not a one way street. The Health Minister also confirmed funding for the major radiotherapy centre at Altnagelvin, Derry, which will service patients from the South.
Both represent examples of practical cross border co-operation that meet the needs of people, North and South.
