This lunchtime the SDLP hosted a major honorary lunch at the convention centre in Dublin, to honour a man who can truly say he made his mark on modernising Ireland. T.K Whitaker, as an Economist and Secretary of the Department of Finance developed new ideas and policies that guided the Irish economy to a more outward looking position in the early 1960’s. It is widely acknowledged that his policy initiative, aided by the political drive of Sean Lemass laid the groundwork for inward investment and significant job creation.
Ken Whitaker was born in Rostrevor Co Down, and is now approaching his 100th year. I am delighted that former President Mary McAleese provided the keynote address, with an attendance of over 700 guests, including many leading political and business figures.
The Taoiseach recently described T.K Whitaker as a “National Treasure” and I would concur. He demonstrates how purposeful thinking and planning can have a transformative impact, and I would like to acknowledge his contribution to Ireland
