The cuts announced by Queens University Belfast are big blow to third level education in the province, and are surely short sighted when we look at the long term needs of our society. These are cuts forced upon Queens by the executive budget, and highlights the real impact of austerity and cut backs.
When the economy remains weak, now is not the time to curtail investment in education and skills, an investment that returns multiple dividends.Nearly one in five people in Northern Ireland have no qualifications, roughtly twice the UK average of 9.9%. Thats not right, and cutting university funding isn’t going to change it. The SDLP are committed to expanding higher education and and ending the brain drain of our young people going abroad.
